MTS to offer Wi-Fi
services at 3 railway stations
NEW DELHI: Russia's
Sistema JFSC that operates under the MTS brand in India has partnered with the
Indian Railways to create Wi-Fi hotspots at three railways stations by the
first quarter of 2015.
"We have got
approval for putting up Wi-Fi hotspots at Agra, Ahmedabad and Varanasi railway
stations and are working on proof of concept," Sistema Shyam Teleservices
Chief Executive Dmitry Shukov said.
MTS, which gets 43% of
its revenue from data services, is banking highly on its banking highly on its
data-driven portfolio and expects it to contribute 50% to its total revenue by
next year.
The deal with the
railways has just been signed, and it would be premature to comment on
modalities and tariff now, the company said.
The telco, after
debuting free Wi-Fi services at Rapid Metro in Gurgaon in May this year, also
plans to replicate it in other cities such as Jaipur and Lucknow where metro
projects are coming up, in addition to Mumbai metropolitan.
"We are exploring
opportunities so that success at Rapid Metro, which was experimental, can be
reproduced," SSTL's top executive added.
MTS had set up five
kiosks at Gurgaon's four Rapid Metro stations and allowed free Wi-Fi access to
more than 30,000 daily commuters. After initial six months of free services,
the company has on October 1 rolled out tariff plans.
